The American Archery Academy will again be offering professional archery instruction to interested Prep students on Thursdays from 3pm to 4:15pm starting August 20th - October 29th, on the Cicero athletic field. There will be three different sessions this year! The sessions will follow Cicero Prep's Fall, Winter and Spring sports schedule. If another sport prohibits you from participating in archery for the Fall sport season, sign up when the Winter and Spring archery programs are announced! Grades: 6, 7, 8 Days: Thursdays Dates: August 20-October 29 No Class: October 15 Fee:$200 (10 sessions) Hiking Club The hiking club will expose students to enrichment in the areas of American history, earth science, visual art, and physical education. The Hiking Club will offer students several opportunities each semester to experience the natural beauty of Arizona through hiking excursions. Cicero Prep's mission of developing the whole person will be served through demanding and refreshing physical endeavors as well as explorations of cross-curricular concepts. Hiking Club will meet in the classroom each week and three Saturday hikes will be planned during the first semester (dates to be determined). Club Sponsor will distribute additional information and forms for parent signatures. Students will catch and throw Frisbees, building athletic ability and developing collaborative teamwork skills. Participants should wear comfortable, modest, athletic clothing for club participation. Once students have become proficient in their craft, they will work together to make items that will be donated to children in need. Club members will work collaboratively to transcribe and study the 16th century English manuscript hanging on the wall in room 121, which was kindly donated to the history department by a Cicero Prep founding family. Prerequisites: None Grades: 8 Days: Mondays Time: 2:50-3:20 August 24-December 7 No Class: September 7, September 14, October 12, October 19 Fee: $35 Participants will learn to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument! Students will acquire fundamental music skills while exploring standard band literature and beautiful music. Emphasis is placed on creative expression and basic music theory in an engaging and supportive environment. Band Club is open to students at any level, including beginners. Students will participate in an end-of-semester concert and may participate in competitions, to be determined by interest. Required Materials: Instrument, Music Stand, Band Book Grades: 6, 7, 8 Days: Thursdays Time: 3:10-4:10 Dates: August 20-December 3 No Class: October 15, November 26 Fee: $200 The Cicero Strings Orchestra will expand upon musical concepts, both theoretical and performance-based, to which students have been exposed in middle school music classes. Middle school students will be challenged to think more deeply about the musicality exhibited while playing music with others. They will also learn about well-established composers and will be asked to listen for what is being said by each composer in his music. In addition, students will learn performance and posture techniques that will make them more proficient with their respective instruments. Finally, students will learn how to perform for an audience with increased comfort and a sense of joy. Grades: 6, 7, 8 Days: Tuesdays Time: 3:00-4:00 pm August 25 through December 8 No Class: October 13 Fee: $50 Students who demonstrate interest and possess advanced skill and talent will receive further music education training to cultivate and develop this talent in choir. The choir will learn, rehearse, and perform advanced choral repertoire at both Fine Arts Nights at Cicero and additional performances throughout the year. Eventually, they will participate in competitions in pursuit of national recognition. Members of choir will learn advanced singing and choral performance techniques, develop their ear and sight reading skills, and learn advanced rhythm. Further, they will develop their musical notation identification skills. They will broaden their knowledge of composition, style, and genre. They will learn pronunciation and basic phonetic reading in foreign languages. Team-building and group working skills will be an integral part of choir club as well.
